Profile: Actor Ian McKellen

I’m scanning birthdays again, looking for juicy karmic stories. It’s McKellen’s birthday tomorrow and I’ve always liked his work, so here we go.

May 25 1939, 9:30 PM, Burnley, England. (rated A)

When it comes to karma, evolutionary astrologers look at the nodes of the Moon and Pluto first. McKellen has his South Node (SN) in Taurus in the 5th house, conjunct Venus and Pallas Athene. Whatever is conjunct the SN saturates our many lives. Venus is of course creativity and sensuality, and Pallas Athene also has much to do with creativity. Yet when Pallas goes wrong it is usually that we are trying to distance ourselves from a natural part of ourselves, fearing that we will not be able to do what we want if we reveal who we really are (See my book Living Myth for an exploration of this side of Pallas Athene).

Squaring the nodal axis are Pluto in the last degree of Cancer in the 8th house and Mars in the first degree of Aquarius and Lilith in late Capricorn in the 2nd house.

The conjunctions and squares to the nodes on one level speak to a need of McKellen’s soul to confront his inner truth and be committed to bring it out. Mars-Pluto opposing each other in the 8th and 2nd will have to do with the perception or question that he can be free to express his sexuality openly, as one example. Venus-Pallas conjunct the SN says that something about Venus in Taurus/5th expression needs in his various lives to be shelved in order to be successful in his home environment and early life. › Continue reading

Mercury Goes Direct in Taurus

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 | Astrology | No Comments

Mercury’s direct now at 2 Taurus.

Now what?

Well, what did you learn the last three weeks about why you do what you do? What did you see about your motivations for doing anything you do?

The ideal is that you gained clarity into where your motivations might be questionable or a little out of alignment with you as a whole. If you learned this it was probably through Mercury-related snafus and your reactions to machinery and other tech breaking down or not working the way you want to or expected.

Did you find yourself insisting that something was worth getting done? Did you commit at all costs to seeing something through no matter what it took?

Did you find yourself letting go of any goals because it wasn’t worth it in the face of tech issues? Did you find yourself reorienting your priorities and leaving some things behind?

Mercury retros are for seeing into and thinking through things in new ways. Taurus is about getting back to basics and figuring out what is truly worth our time and attention.

Take what you saw in how things were working differently and whatever frustration you might have had to tell you what’s really important to you now. What changed during Mercury’s retrograde involved a temporary shift in your perceptive abilities. You could see into things in new ways and therefore learn more about yourself.

What you decided was important is what is now important.

So, what’s next? What’s truly important to you?

Mercury Retrograde Astrology Readings

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 | Astrology | No Comments

Heard you shouldn’t sign contracts or make agreements during Mercury’s retros? Heard you shouldn’t conduct new business or begin relationships? What about getting astrology readings?

I’ve been doing readings for people during these retros since I began practicing astrology. I have never let a Mercury retro stop me from doing something. I have however let each one slow me down and make me check my motivations and my thought process. I’m like everyone else in that during these times I miss details and find I make typos I don’t at first catch. So I’m slower. More methodical. More careful. I go over things a few more times during these periods.

The basic deal with Mercury retro three times each year is that the energy of communication (and the “machines” that execute communication – mouth, ears, brain, hands, etc.) are working differently. Often we miss details we would otherwise catch. The question becomes if we are willing to allow things to work differently so that we learn new things in new ways or if we fight to keep control over things we simply cannot control.

So yes, my brain works differently now and yes, the brain of the client works differently. I choose to have patience with how our minds, mouths, and ears are working. And because I do, some interesting things happen.

Mercury retros can allow you to hear and think into things. When during a reading I notice something out of the ordinary going down in my brain or that I seem unable to articulate concisely what I want to say, I trust that what does happen is what should happen. I don’t always know the purpose of what feels right to say and during these retros my clients are hearing things differently to begin with.

Mercury retros can distract the left brain enough to let the right brain sneak in a little more info than it otherwise would be able to get into the flow. The strategy I use is to allow things to go how they want to. And if that involves some weird transitions between topics or apparently random ideas sneaking in, so be it. The weird and the random are what we need to open to during the thrice-yearly retros of the planet of communication. Minds work differently. Mouths and hands work differently. Who’s to say that the regular way they work is how they should work? We can learn from info that sneaks in beyond the control of our rational minds.

It ends up being a win-win if everyone involved chooses to have patience for how things are unfolding. I’m often surprised at where the conversations end up going, and my clients are always happy with the new thing that came through they didn’t realize they wanted to hear.
